    EXPLAINING CUSTOMER ACTIVATION WITH DEEP ATTENTION MODELS

    Effectively informing consumers is a big challenge for financial service providers. Triggering involvement in the personal situation of the client is a result of sending relevant information at the right time. While general machine learning techniques are able to accurately predict the behavior of consumers, they tend to lack interpretability. This is a problem since interpretation aims at producing the information a communication department requires to be able to trigger involvement. In this paper we provide a solution for predicting and explaining customer activation as result of a series of events, by means of deep learning and attention models. The proposed solution is applied to data concerning the activity of pension fund participants and compared to standard machine learning techniques on both accuracy and interpretability. We conclude that the attention based model is as accurate as top tier machine learning algorithms in predicting customer activation, while being able to extract the key events in the communication with a single customer. This results in the ability to help understand the needs of customers on a personal level and to construct an individual marketing strategy for each customer

    Polynomial Size Analysis of First-Order Shapely Functions

    We present a size-aware type system for first-order shapely function definitions. Here, a function definition is called shapely when the size of the result is determined exactly by a polynomial in the sizes of the arguments. Examples of shapely function definitions may be implementations of matrix multiplication and the Cartesian product of two lists. The type system is proved to be sound w.r.t. the operational semantics of the language. The type checking problem is shown to be undecidable in general. We define a natural syntactic restriction such that the type checking becomes decidable, even though size polynomials are not necessarily linear or monotonic. Furthermore, we have shown that the type-inference problem is at least semi-decidable (under this restriction). We have implemented a procedure that combines run-time testing and type-checking to automatically obtain size dependencies.     One of the proposed solutions for improving the scalability of semantics of programming languages is Component-Based Semantics, introduced by Peter D. Mosses. It is expected that this framework can also be used effectively for modular meta theoretic reasoning. This paper presents a formalization of Component-Based Semantics in the theorem prover Coq. It is based on Modular SOS, a variant of SOS, and makes essential use of dependent types, while profiting from type classes. This formalization constitutes a contribution towards modular meta theoretic formalizations in theorem provers.     Discovery of a New Drug-like Series of OGT Inhibitors by Virtual Screening

    O-GlcNAcylation is an essential post-translational modification installed by the enzyme O-β- N-acetyl-d-glucosaminyl transferase (OGT). Modulating this enzyme would be extremely valuable to better understand its role in the development of serious human pathologies, such as diabetes and cancer. However, the limited availability of potent and selective inhibitors hinders the validation of this potential therapeutic target. To explore new chemotypes that target the active site of OGT, we performed virtual screening of a large library of commercially available compounds with drug-like properties. We purchased samples of the most promising virtual hits and used enzyme assays to identify authentic leads. Structure-activity relationships of the best identified OGT inhibitor were explored by generating a small library of derivatives. Our best hit displays a novel uridine mimetic scaffold and inhibited the recombinant enzyme with an IC 50 value of 7 µM. The current hit represents an excellent starting point for designing and developing a new set of OGT inhibitors that may prove useful for exploring the biology of OGT

    European Union Approaches to Human Rights Violations in Kosovo before and after Independence

    This article examines European Union (EU) approaches to the question of human rights violations in Kosovo before and after its proclamation of independence, in February 2008. While the 1999 NATO-led humanitarian intervention in the region was often justified as necessary due to the continuous abuses of human rights, perpetrated by the Serbian forces against the ethic Kosovo Albanians, the post-interventionist period has witnessed a dramatic reversal of roles, with the rights of the remaining Serbian minority being regularly abused by the dominant Albanian population. However, in contrast to the former scenario, the Brussels administration has remained quite salient about the post-independence context – a grey zone of unviable political and social components, capable of generating new confrontations and human rights abuses within the borders of Kosovo. Aware of this dynamic and the existing EU official rhetoric, it is possible to conclude that the embedded human rights concerns in Kosovo are not likely to disappear, but even more importantly, their relevance has been significantly eroded
